How HeatShield Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

• HeatShield SS Series cap: rust at the screen seam. On older HeatShield SS Series caps, the stainless screen is press-fitted into the cap body, and in Manhattan’s coastal humidity plus freeze-thaw cycles, that seam starts to hold water. The screen itself stays fine, but the cap frame rusts from the inside out. We see this most often on brownstones in the West 80s and 90s where the cap faces the Hudson. The fix is usually a full cap replacement, not a screen swap, because the frame integrity is already compromised.
• HeatShield crown coating: hairline cracking at the flue tile junction. HeatShield’s crown repair system is good, but the weakest point is always where the crown meets the flue tile. On older Manhattan co-ops along Riverside Drive and West End Avenue, the original crowns were poured thin, and HeatShield’s coating can’t bridge a gap wider than about a quarter inch.
